Our Legacy

In 2013, Bernard Duvernay of Flying Anvil Foundation (FAF), Geneva, Switzerland set up the FAF Farriery Institute Dundlod in Rajasthan, India. A not-for-profit organization Flying Anvil Foundation India (FAF-INDIA) was formed to manage the institute’s operations and to support the farriery profession in India. It is the first formal civilian farriery training institute in India.

Our Mission

The Flying Anvil Foundation India fosters quality hoofcare and promotion of knowledge in farriery. FAF-INDIA is a not-for-profit foundation that works with local partners to organize courses and workshops to raise standard of farriery in India. The Foundation’s goal is to improve the well-being of the equines and to help communities and professionals improve and assure their own sustainable economic progress.

Equine well-being

Ensuring equine well-being involves providing proper care, nutrition, shelter, exercise, farriery care, veterinary attention, and meeting their natural behavioral and social needs. It is essential for maintaining the health and happiness of horses and promoting their overall welfare. Farriery plays an essential role in preventing lameness, unbalanced feet, and the suffering of horses.

Employability

India lacks qualified farriers, and our institute is the only one in the country promoting the profession. We provide our trainees with the right education to give them the best chances of success in an interesting farrier career. “Employability” refers to the combination of skills, knowledge, personal qualities, and attributes that make an individual suitable for employment. It encompasses not only having the necessary qualifications and experience for a job but also the ability to adapt to different work environments, communicate effectively, work well in a team, and continue learning and developing professionally. Enhancing employability is crucial for individuals to secure and progress in their careers.

Promoting Farriery

“Promoting farriery” involves raising awareness about the profession of farriery, highlighting its importance in equine health and welfare, and encouraging individuals to consider pursuing a career in this field. This can be achieved through educational programs, workshops, demonstrations, advertising, and networking within the equine community to showcase the value of skilled farriers in maintaining the well-being of horses. By promoting farriery, we aim to increase interest, recognition, and support for this vital aspect of horse care.

Industry Connects

“Farriery connects” refers to the relationships and interactions that farriers have within the equine industry. These connections are crucial for networking with other professionals, such as veterinarians, trainers, and horse owners, to provide holistic care for horses. By building strong farriery connects, farriers can access resources, share knowledge, and stay updated on the latest developments and best practices in the field. These connections enable farriers to collaborate, learn from each other, and collectively contribute to the well-being and performance of horses.

FAF-INDIA in collaboration with FAF Geneva provides modular courses and workshops that are taught by a worldwide network of highly qualified farrier volunteers prepared to give their time and share their knowledge. They are supported by local Indian teachers.

What We Do

FAF-INDIA runs a Farrier Certificate Course. This is a two-module course of 3 weeks each conducted at the Foundation’s institute in Dundlod, Rajasthan. The course covers topics like Anatomy, horse handling, trimming, cold shoeing, forging and hot fitting, lameness, corrective shoeing and more.

In addition, we also run short courses for equine vets, local street farriers and shoe making (forging).

We also support our students to be gainfully employed after the courses.

Farriery in India

According to the 2019 animal census, there are over 1.1 million equines in India. Equine ownership is an important livelihood source for many families and thus these animals’ health is paramount. India also has the potential to make it big in the lucrative business of thoroughbred horse breeding, equestrian sports, and pleasure riding, with foal production witnessing an impressive growth.

Farriery plays a critical role in maintaining hoofcare for equines. In this area India faces challenges in providing quality farriery due to lack of formal training facilities, an informal workforce and lack of farriery regulations. Farriery as a profession is underdeveloped in India. It is imperative that farriery technical training is inclusive covering farriers, owners and even veterinarians
